The day finally came, Mercer IT announced that "MercerLive" was now online. My first thought: Lets get this working with Gmail!

With useful apps like Docs, Wave, Talk, and Gmail itself, Google's offerings are superior to Live@Edu. Skydrive is almost useful, but between Wave, Docs, and a flash drive, I'm covered. Of course, Mercer IT is utterly clueless about any system that Microsoft salesmen haven't pitched them, so they outsourced student mail to Microsoft.

Here's how to have Gmail manage your MercerLive email:

PART A: Initial Live Account Setup
1. Visit the MercerLive login page: http://mercerlive.mercer.edu/
2. Your username is MUID@live.mercer.edu (Your MUID is printed on your bearcard)
3. Your password is the default YYMMDD (ex. 991231 if your birthday was Dec 31, 1999)
4. Click "Sign In".
5. You will be presented with a series of questions. First, you're asked to re-enter your default password. (YYMMDD) You then are asked to create a new password (at least 6 letters long) and fill out some other self-explanatory stuff.
6. Once you submit the form, you will be asked to log in again. Use your NEW password created in step 5 this time.
7. You should now have access to MercerLive mail. If your old address was Toby@student.mercer.edu, your NEW address is Toby@live.mercer.edu
(After this guide, take a moment to update Facebook with your new address)

PART B: Import Mail from Old Server to MercerLive (Optional)
** If you already set up Gmail to pull mail from student.mercer.edu skip to PART C **
1. Assuming you haven't gone wandering, you should be staring at an empty mailbox.
2. Click "Options", in the top-right corner.
3. At the bottom, there is a section called "Other Mailboxes". Click the "New..." button.
4. A popup window appears. Enter MUID@student.mercer.edu as the username (Your MUID is printed on your bear card)
5. Enter the password that you used for old Mercer Webmail
6. Click "Next".
7. In a moment, it will say "You're good to go! Your accounts are now connected. You'll see mail from your other account soon." Clicking "Finish" closes the popup window.
8. Eventually you will see old messages populating the MercerLive inbox. Please note: Folders are ignored during the transfer, if you made stuff tidy before, prepare for a mess.

PART C: Import MercerLive email to Gmail
1. Sign out of MercerLive, we're done with it.
2. Log in to Gmail
3. Click "Settings" at the top-right
4. Click the "Accounts & Import" tab
5. Click "Add POP3 Email Account"
6. A popup window appears. Enter your new email address, (ex. Toby@live.mercer.edu) then click Next.
7. Now theres a few things to fill-in:
- Username: MUID@live.mercer.edu
- Password: Use the password you created in Part A, Step 5
- POP Server: outlook.com
- Port: 995
- Be sure the box "Always use a secure connection (SSL) when retrieving mail." is checked
Click "Add Account"
8. Click "Next Step"
9. Make sure your name is how you want it to be shown on outgoing messages. Click "Next Step".
10. Click "Next Step" (
11. Click "Send Verification"
12. Click "Close window"
13. Gmail is now set up to receive mail from MercerLive.
14. Return to the Inbox and look for a verification email from Google, and click the link enclosed. (May take a while for the message to arrive) After clicking the link, Gmail will allow you to SEND mail using your @live.mercer.edu address.

PART D: Use filters to screen out campus-wide junk messages (Optional)
1. In Gmail, click "Settings" at top-right
2. Click the Filters tab
3. Click "Create a New Filter"
4. Fill in the search boxes with keywords to find the messages you want to filter
Examples (do one at a time):
- Messages sent to everyone on campus. Enter the following in the "To" box:
egrstudents-l@Mercer.edu OR macstudents-l@Mercer.edu OR students-l@Mercer.edu OR macon-l@Mercer.edu
- Facebook notifications. Enter the following in the "From" box:
facebookmail.com
- Mercer Rave Alerts. Enter the following in the "From" box:
mercer@getrave.com
- Mercer Calendar Announcements (This Week @ Mercer). Enter the following in the "From" box:
thisweek@Mercer.edu OR calendar@Mercer.edu
5. Click "Test Search", it should turn up old messages matching your keywords.
6. If you are satisfied with the results, click "Next Step". Otherwise, add/subtract keywords to get just the messages you want.
7. Choose the actions you want Gmail to do to the filtered messages. (Ex. Delete campus-wide junk you don't read anyway)
8. Optional: Check the "Also apply filter to X conversations below" box to apply the filter to your test search.
9. Click "Create Filter"
10. Your filter is ready to go! As new mail arrives, the actions you chose will be applied. Add more filters as needed.
